Description

Myosotis sylvatica Ultramarine, as its name suggests, is a compact variety of wood forget-me-not with beautiful ultramarine blue flowers. This small plant forms regular and very flowery cushions in spring. Nicknamed "forget-me-not" because sown once, it then self-seeds wherever it pleases over the years, but not always faithfully. Plant it among spring bulbs and perennials, at the base of bushes and in flower pots. This plant is happy in our climates and prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil. It thrives in the sun or partial shade.

Myosotis sylvatica is a plant from the Boraginaceae family. It is a botanical species native to almost all of Europe, except for the extreme north and southwest. In the wild, it is found in meadows, clear undergrowth, and at the edge of forests. This plant is biennial, meaning it flowers in the second year after sowing and then disappears. The 'Ultramarine' selection is shorter and more bushy, first forming small rosettes of hairy, pale green leaves. The plant flowers from April to June. Its hairy floral stems, branched in their upper part, carry curved inflorescences that lengthen slightly as the flowers bloom. They consist of small intense blue, 4mm (0in) diameter, sometimes semi-double flowers, with a small yellow heart. Once well established, Ultramarine forget-me-not self-seeds abundantly in the garden, but the colour of the flowers and the habit of its offspring may vary.

Wood forget-me-not is traditionally used to enhance spring bulbs (daffodils, narcissus), cowslip primrose, or tulips by lightening their flowering. It is happy in the garden and also thrives in flower pots on the terrace or balcony. You can also plant it in large groups in perennial borders, as edging and in planters. In very sunny regions, it will also thrive in the shade of woods alongside bleeding hearts. The delicate flowers of wood forget-me-not are very decorative in spring bouquets, to enhance large flowers (especially peony or rose). Its motto could well be: 'Sown once, you will always have it'.

Planting and care

Sow the Ultramarine forget-me-not from June to August on the surface of a moist, light and well-drained compost. Do not cover the seeds. Enclose in a polythene bag at a temperature of 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F). Germination usually takes 14 to 30 days. Do not exclude light, as it aids germination. The seeds can also be sown directly outdoors, at a depth of 6 mm (0in), in rows spaced 30 cm (12in) apart. Thin to a distance of 20 cm (8in). Transplant the seedlings when they are large enough, into individual pots. Let them grow in cooler conditions for 10 to 15 days before transplanting them in autumn or early spring, 15 cm (6in) apart.

Late summer sowings can overwinter in a cool place, to be transplanted outdoors in spring. Wood forget-me-nots tolerate any ordinary, well-drained soil, in partial shade or dappled sunlight.
