The Scree Garden, inspired by Mediterranean scrubland landscapes and the Beth Chatto Gravel Garden, requires no watering. The main principles: plant in well-draining soil, use a mineral mulch, plant perennials and bushes suited to dry soil or Mediterranean plants, spaced out to let the mineral elements breathe.

We favour slender silhouettes and aromatic foliage: Lavenders structure the lines and attract pollinators. Ornamental Grasses like Stipa tenuifolia add movement and filter the light. Rockroses offer a delightful spring flowering above a silvery cushion. Dwarf Lavender Cottons and Artemisias weave grey masses, useful for borders. Common Sages and small-leaved sages flower until late in the season. Phlomis fruticosa, Eryngium, Verbascum, Gaura and Stonecrops (Sedum) also offer good drought resistance. To structure a mineral garden, consider the Olive Tree, the Strawberry Tree or the Chamaerops humilis in mild climates.

How to create a Mediterranean scrubland atmosphere?

The scree garden is exposed in full sun, it is established on poor, stony, very well-drained soils; loosen the soil to a depth of 30–40 cm and lay a mineral mulch (4–6 cm). Watering should be sparing in the 1st year, then almost none. Practise light pruning after flowering to maintain compact shapes and limit dead wood. Well-drained ground in winter is the key to success.
