Description

Veronica 'Lavender Lightsaber' is a robust hybrid Veronica that is excellent for borders. The plant forms a compact tuft of leaves with long, branching, lavender flower spikes in summer, adding height and sculptural interest to any setting. This hardy variety thrives in the sun with minimal maintenance and is excellent as a cut flower.

Veronica 'Lavender Lightsaber' was bred by the renowned perennial plant breeder Hans Hansen of Walters Gardens in Michigan, United States. It is a perennial plant in the plantain family, formerly classified in the figwort family. The plant develops a small, compact tuft of leafy stems about 30-35 cm (12-14in) high and 40 cm (16in) wide. This variety reaches 75 cm (30in) high when in flower. Its hairy stems bear ovate to lanceolate, dark green leaves with finely toothed edges. From July to August and sometimes until September, it produces 40 cm (16in) long, nectar-rich floral spikes at the tips of the stems with secondary floral spikes quite low on the flower stems. Countless small star-shaped flowers cluster on the upright spikes. The above-ground vegetation dries out in winter and regrows in spring.

Veronica 'Lavender Lightsaber' can be planted in any loose, not too dry soil, preferably in full sun. It is particularly suited to flower borders alongside robust perennials such as 'Shapcott Ruffles' daisies, 'Lilac Girl' Oriental poppies, echinaceas. Its combination with Black-eyed Susans is original and pleasing and its lavender spikes will complement the most beautiful roses. It can also be grown in a large pot on the terrace or balcony.
