Interestingly, they are only in bloom at the moment. I had forgotten about them a bit, and what a surprise to see them flowering in the autumn. Perhaps it is due to the extreme drought this summer?

Description

Allium neapolitanum, also known as Neapolitan garlic, is a lovely medium-sized species that bears beautiful, bright umbels of pure white flowers.

This small bulbous perennial, 45 to 50cm (18 to 20in) tall, with a smooth, thick, trigonous stem, has deciduous, linear, flat, soft green leaves, 2 to 3cm (1in) wide. From late May to early June, it produces small umbels filled with open cup-shaped, pure white flowers.

Allium neapolitanum is a pioneering plant that spontaneously grows on slopes and abandoned ground in about half of southern Mediterranean Europe. This garlic tolerates all poor, moist, and well-drained soils in warm locations. Avoid very wet soils in winter. Be careful, as it quickly spreads if it likes its environment. Pot cultivation is possible: use a light substrate composed of 1/3 sand, 1/3 compost, and 1/3 perlite.

Allium neapolitanum is perfect for filling sunny borders in a wild garden. Plant it alongside fescues, moss phlox, and aubrietas.

Planting and care

Plant Allium neapolitanum in autumn at a depth of 8 to 10cm (3 to 4in) in moist but well-drained soil in a warm location, spaced 15cm (6in) apart. Add sand to the planting hole to improve drainage. Avoid heavy soils. It can withstand harsh winters if water is not allowed to stagnate.
