Alstroemeria 'Koexotica' INCA EXOTICA - Alstroemère Inca Exotica, Lys des Incas Inca Exotica

The Alstroemeria ‘Koexotica’ Inca Exotica is a compact Inca lily that offers a long-lasting and particularly bright flowering. Its golden yellow flowers, generously splashed with orange, light up pots and the front of borders all summer. This variety from the Inca series has very bushy growth and performs well in the garden as well as in a vase.

This alstroemeria belongs to the family Alstroemeriaceae. It is called alstroemeria, Inca lily or Peruvian lily Inca Exotica. This cultivar named ‘Koexotica’  and marketed under the name Inca Exotica was bred by Johannes Wilhelmus Maria Konst for Könst Breeding B.V., in the Netherlands, and registered in 2005. The Inca series brings together varieties selected for their compact habit, good garden performance and suitability for growing in open ground as well as in pots.
Inca Exotica is a perennial with fleshy, brittle roots. Like other hybrid alstroemerias, it descends from South American species. The plant forms a compact, dense clump, initially rounded then more upright, 45 to 50 cm tall and 35 to 40 cm wide. Its growth is fairly rapid in rich soil. The deciduous foliage consists of narrow, lanceolate leaves, bright to medium green, arranged along sturdy stems. The plant is dormant during winter, then regrows from the stump in spring if not destroyed by frost. It gradually fills out over the years. Flowering begins in June and often continues until October. The flowers are gathered in clusters at the tops of the stems. They are open funnel-shaped and consist of six tepals. The outer petals are golden yellow to orange-yellow, marked with a broad area of deeper orange. The inner ones are more yellow, striped and punctate with brown to reddish-brown. These flowers measure about 4.5 to 5 cm in diameter. They last well in a vase. The thick, fragile roots particularly fear excess water and hard frosts.

In the garden, the alstroemeria Inca Exotica is used in borders, small beds or large pots placed near the house. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil that remains moist in summer. In warm regions, a sunny exposure in the morning or lightly shaded in the afternoon suits it well. You can associate it with shrubby sage Salvia greggii ‘Mirage Burgundy’, the Buenos Aires verbena 'Lollipop', Gaura lindheimeri ‘Summer Breeze’ and Agastache ‘Kudos Gold’. This small planting will be airy, bright and well-balanced.
