More information

A tuberous begonia with a very trailing habit and large, bright yellow double flowers, ideal for hanging baskets and planters. It thrives in partial shade, in a rich, well-draining substrate, with regular watering without excess. Its long flowering period, from June to October, does not tolerate wind and heavy rain well; it should be placed on a sheltered balcony. It is not hardy, its tuber should be overwintered dry and frost-free.

Description

The trailing Begonia ‘Cascade Yellow’, with its bright yellow flowers, belongs to a series of tuberous begonias designed for hanging baskets and window boxes in partial shade. Its flexible and particularly trailing habit creates a very beautiful cascading effect. It is cultivated as a summer annual, with the tuber stored away from frost and moisture in winter.

A member of the Begoniaceae family, this cultivar belongs to the horticultural group Begonia × tuberhybrida, the tuberous begonias. ‘Cascade Yellow’ is a selection from the "Cascade" series, characterised by its very trailing habit, its floribundus nature, and its flowers which are larger than those of many generic yellow Pendula-type begonias like the Yellow Pendula.
The plant forms a trailing and branched clump within a few weeks, reaching 20–25 cm in height with a 30–50 cm spread. Its brittle stems trail for 40 to 60 cm, depending on the pot size. The inflorescences are clusters with very double male flowers, 7–10 cm in diameter, and smaller, simpler female flowers. The flowering period extends from June to September-October if faded flowers are removed and the plant is fed regularly.
The foliage consists of medium to dark green, asymmetrical, ovate, 6–12 cm long leaves with a toothed margin. The root system comprises a flattened tuber producing superficial, shallow roots. The plant enters dormancy in autumn, its foliage yellows and the tuber must be kept dry at 8–10 °C throughout the winter.

In partial shade, in a sheltered position, plant ‘Cascade Yellow’ in hanging baskets, deep window boxes, or raised bowls to enhance an entrance or an east or north-facing window. You can pair it with a semi-trailing Fuchsia ‘Swingtime’, a Bacopa Gulliver Dynamic White for its lightness, and a variegated grass like Holcus mollis Albovariegatus which thrives in shade. The whole display will be enhanced by the blue flowering of Lobelia erinus ‘Crystal Palace’ placed at the edge of the planter.

Etymology: the genus Begonia was named in 1690 by Charles Plumier in honour of Michel Bégon; the × tuberhybrida result from the first successful hybridisations in the 19th century using Andean species.
The wave of trailing begonias for hanging baskets spread across Europe with specialised series, including "Cascade", to obtain uniform plants suited to urban balconies.

Planting and care

Plant your Begonia Pendula 'Cascade Yellow' in a shaded or lightly sunny position, in light and moist soil, rich in humus. Begonias dislike overly heavy soils; lighten your earth with compost and sand. Plant after the last frosts, one per pot of about twenty cm, or spaced 25 cm apart in open ground. Position the tuber with the concave (hollow) part facing upwards, then cover with 5 cm of soil. As with Dahlias, you can accelerate their cycle by planting them as early as February, in sheltered pots, moving them outdoors in May. Water very regularly. Apply begonia fertiliser at planting, then twice a month during the season. Remove faded flowers.
Dig up the tubers before the first frosts, and store them in a little peat, in a dry and cool place, during the winter. This is a shade-loving plant that will grow better if it receives a few hours of sunlight per day. It is quite sensitive to powdery mildew and nematodes and requires regular, but not excessive, watering.
