Hyacinth Orchid
I really like this flower, especially the colour because it reminds me of my childhood when my mum used to try to put me to sleep when I was a baby.

Description
Bletilla striata Soryu Blue Dragon is a recent and hardy orchid. It is as charming as it is easy to grow in any garden. In spring, it forms large, relaxed clumps of numerous shiny, channelled leaves, from which small purplish-blue typical orchid flowers emerge in late spring stems. This plant is well suited for woodland gardens and thrives in partial shade, in any good, moisture-retaining garden soil.
This new orchid comes directly from Japan, where it was created a few years ago. It has recently been made available for sale. This plant is a blue variety of Bletilla striata. It develops from semi-buried pseudobulbs, resembling tubers, which form an arc of 45 cm (18in) in length. From spring onwards, it forms a trailing clump that widens over time, composed of broad, arching leaves that are somewhat soft. It produces small, open flowers in spring or summer (from May to July), depending on the climate, on stems reaching up to 40 cm (16in) in height. The flowers are a shimmering lavender-blue, highlighted with white. The flower consists of 3 sepals and 3 petals, one of which is quite distinct and called the lip. It is often this floral part that is remarkable in orchids. The lip of Bletilla Blue Dragon is adorned with small white ruffles along its length, on a background marked with darker blue-violet spots. The deciduous leaves are medium green, beautifully plicate, and measure up to 30 cm (12in) in length and 5 to 7 cm (2 to 3in) in width. The plant produces seeds that give rise to plants identical to the parent plant.
This woodland orchid is easy to grow under favourable conditions (humus-rich and moist soil), but it is recommended for experienced gardeners. It adapts well to most climates. It likes sheltered, bright locations, but not direct sunlight. Its leaves will disappear due to frost, but they will regenerate in early spring. The rhizomatous clump will slowly produce suckers to form beautiful clusters. Plant Bletilla Blue Dragon in light, moist woodland areas, or even near water features, alongside arisaemas, ferns, or hostas. Bletilla can also be grown in pots to enhance your patios
, in semi-shade, but they should be protected during cold winters.

Planting and care
Plant Bletilla Soryu Blue Dragon in a humus-rich, light, airy, and well-drained soil. You can improve the soil in your garden by incorporating compost. For optimal results, add 20% lava stone, which will help maintain good moisture in summer while ensuring good drainage during winter. More than intense frost, it is the excess water in winter that proves to be the main enemy of these orchids. If the soil in your garden is too compact or clay, we recommend creating a planting pocket. Dig a hole of about 40 cm (16in) cubed, cover the bottom with a layer of drainage (lava stone or fine gravel), and fill it with the mixture indicated above. Bletilla can also be grown in pots. However, make sure to choose a container that is large enough, with a minimum diameter of 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16in), to allow new shoots to develop on the periphery. Water regularly from April to September, then let your plants rest. In winter, in regions with very severe cold ,-20°C (1°F), place your pots in a cool, below 5°C (41°F), and bright place.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
