Description

Verbena Estrella Voodoo Red Star is a radiant variety that is covered in bicoloured red and white-cream flowers gathered in round bouquets. It blooms for over four months. The spectacular flowers are carried at the end of stems that remain short. This variety forms a small, semi-trailing tuft that is particularly compact, making it ideal for pots and hanging baskets. It is grown as an annual. It is a generous, floriferous, and undemanding plant that tolerates watering neglect. It requires full sun.

Verbena Estrella Voodoo Red Star belongs to the Verbenaceae family. It is a horticultural hybrid whose ancestors inhabited the warm regions of South America. The Estrella series, developed in Germany, is distinguished by vibrant and pure-coloured flowers. Their stems do not elongate indefinitely or appear leafless and graceless. This plant forms a compact and slightly trailing clump that is rather stocky, measuring 25 to 35cm (10 to 14in) tall, and spreading about 35 to 45cm (14 to 18in). From May-June until September-October, it produces flexible and upright stems that carry dense and round bouquets, 3 to 5cm (1 to 2in) wide, composed of fairly large flowers (1.5 cm (1in)) whose vermillion red colour presents a beautiful radiating star with 5 branches of pale-yellow to white-cream. The shape of the widely open flowers resembles that of phlox. The triangular dark leaves are toothed at the edges, 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) long. This perennial plant succumbs to frost and is grown as an annual in our climates.

Garden verbenas are easy to grow, suffering more from excess water and food than from temporary neglect. They overflow from hanging baskets, and slip between other upright plants in flower pots or planters, hiding their base without being affected by their presence. They are also beautiful in rockeries, quickly filling the spaces left by damage caused by a harsh winter. Create a beautiful hanging basket by planting this verbena with a white pelargonium, a purple-leaved ipomoea, and intense blue lobelias.

Our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in shelters (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Plant in a sunny location. They need light and humus-rich soil and appreciate a moderate supply of fertiliser and water. They tolerate rather dry soil quite well. You can plant your verbenas in pots, hanging baskets, or flower boxes. In pots, they should be regularly watered, without excess, letting the surface dry between two waterings.

They are fragile perennials that are usually grown as annuals. You can bring them indoors at the first sign of frost to extend their flowering period during autumn and winter. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, by mulching well in winter and protecting the stump from moisture with plastic.

Plan for light pruning in March.
