Plants that struggle to establish themselves, do not grow in height but behave like creeping ground covers.

Description

Verbena Pink Ballet from the excellent 'Estrella' series is a disease-resistant plant with a beautifully trailing habit that remains compact and adorable pastel flowers that will last until the first frost. It produces numerous round umbels filled with small pink flowers that turn white, transforming the plant into an adorable pastel and romantic display.  Grown as an annual, it is ideal for pots and hanging baskets, and lovely in summer flower beds. It is a generous, blooming and undemanding plant that tolerates drought, forgetful watering, and poor soil, but requires full sun.

Verbena 'Estrella Pink Ballet' belongs to the verbena family and is a recent horticultural hybrid, whose ancestors inhabited the warm regions of South America. This plant forms a compact yet trailing clump, reaching 30 cm (12in) in height and spreading about 50 cm (20in). Its stems are adorned with delicate, slightly villous, medium green foliage. Relentlessly from June until October, it produces gently trailing upright stems that lengthen as round and dense bouquets of tiny flowers appear, ranging in colour from pale pink to candy pink, gradually fading to white, resembling those of phlox. This perennial plant succumbs to frost and is grown as an annual in our climate, thanks to its rapid growth.

The Pink Ballet verbenas are truly easy to grow, suffering more from excess water and food than from occasional neglect. They overflow from hanging baskets and weave between other upright plants in flower pots or containers, hiding their feet without suffering from their presence. They are also beautiful in rock gardens, allowing you to quickly fill in the empty spaces caused by damage from a harsh winter. Create a beautiful hanging display by combining Pink Ballet verbena with a red or white geranium or a lavender blue Bacopa, a purple-leaved sweet potato vine, and intense blue lobelias.

Note: Attention, our plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered area (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

Plant your Verbena Estrella Pink Ballet in a sunny position. They need a light and humus-rich soil and appreciate a moderate supply of fertiliser and water. They tolerate rather dry soil quite well. You can plant your verbenas in pots, hanging baskets or flower boxes. In pots, they should be regularly watered, without excess, allowing the surface to dry between two waterings. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually fragile perennials: by bringing them indoors at the first frost, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, by mulching well in winter and protecting the stump from moisture with plastic. Plan for light pruning in March.
