Description

Verbena or Vervain Virgo Lavender Star is a recent, vigorous and resistant hybrid variety that maintains a naturally well-groomed appearance until the end of the season. Its fresh, star-shaped flowers in white on a blue-mauve background are gathered in large globular umbels at the end of fairly short stems, adorned with thin dark green foliage. It is a generous, flowering plant from summer to autumn, a low-maintenance verbena that tolerates forgetfulness in watering and poor soils, but requires full sun. Ideal in garden pots, flower boxes and hanging baskets, this selection with a compact and semi-trailing habit will also stand out in summer flowerbeds.

The Vervain Virgo Lavender Star belongs to the Verbenaceae family and is a very recent horticultural hybrid whose ancestors inhabited the warm regions of South America. The 'Virgo' series gathers reliable and vigorous varieties with vibrant and pure colors, whose stems do not elongate indefinitely, preventing the plant from appearing leafless and unsightly. On the contrary, this plant forms a compact and slightly trailing tuft, rather stocky, 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14in) tall, spreading about 35 to 45 cm (14 to 18in). It tirelessly produces flexible and erect stems from early summer to the first frosts, bearing beautiful dense and round bouquets composed of fairly large flowers, randomly striped with white. Usually bicolored in blue and white, some flowers can sometimes, on certain plants, be completely white or solid mauve, without detracting from the overall appearance of the flowering. They can be easily removed according to personal taste. The shape of the fully open flowers evokes that of phlox. This perennial plant succumbs to frost, it is grown as an annual in our climates, thanks to its rapid growth.

Garden verbenas are truly easy plants to grow, suffering more from excess water and nutrients than from temporary neglect. They overflow from hanging baskets, slip between other upright plants in flower pots or flower boxes, concealing their base without suffering from their presence. They are also very beautiful in rockeries, allowing for quickly filling in the spaces left empty by damage caused by a too harsh winter. Create a beautiful hanging basket by combining the Superbena Stormburst verbena with a red or bright pink pelargonium, lavender, and a purple-leaved ipomoea. Another idea for combination: pair the Stormburst verbena with a bright blue-flowered Victoria sage, a tender yellow calibrachoa, and a lobelia Anabel Blue.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in sheltered locations (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

Plant your annual Verbena in a sunny location. They need a light and humus-rich soil (a good horticultural compost) and appreciate a moderate supply of fertiliser and water. They tolerate rather dry soil quite well when planted in the ground. You can plant your verbenas in pots, hanging baskets, or planters. In pots, they should be watered regularly, without excess, allowing the surface to dry between waterings. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually delicate perennials: by bringing them indoors at the first frost, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, by mulching well in winter and protecting the stump from moisture with plastic. Prune lightly in March.
