Description

Verbena Virgo Sky Blue , with its long and generous sky blue flowering and its lovely compact and semi-trailing habit, is perfect for hanging baskets and summer arrangements. Vigorous and resistant but sensitive to cold, it is most often grown as an annual, in pots but also for summer borders. It is a low-maintenance plant that tolerates drought, neglectful watering, and poor soils, but it requires full sun.

The Virgo Sky Blue Verbena belongs to the vervain family, it is a horticultural hybrid whose ancestors inhabited the warm regions of South America. This plant forms in just a few weeks a dense and slightly trailing or spreading clump, rather compact, 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12in) tall, spreading about 35 to 45 cm (14 to 18in). It tirelessly produces flexible and upright stems, which produce beautiful dense and round clusters of tiny light blue flowers with white centres reminiscent of phlox flowers. This plant, theoretically perennial, succumbs to frost, it is grown as an annual in our climates, thanks to its rapid growth.

Garden verbenas are truly easy plants to grow, suffering more from excess water and food than from occasional neglect. They overflow from hanging baskets, slip between other upright plants in flowerpots or containers, concealing their base without being affected by their presence. They are also very beautiful in rock gardens, quickly filling in the spaces left by damage caused by a too harsh winter. Create a beautiful hanging basket by pairing the Sky Blue verbena with a red or bright pink geranium, a purple-leaved Ipomoea, and pink-flowering annuals, for example. In a completely different style, also try pairing sky blue with yellow (BeautiCal Caramel Yellow Petunia) or orange (Diascia Genta Papaya Orange).

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

Plant your Verbena Virgo Sky Blue in a sunny position. They require a light and humus-rich soil and appreciate a moderate supply of fertilizer and water. They tolerate rather dry soil quite well. You can plant your verbenas in pots, hanging baskets or flower boxes. In pots, they should be watered regularly, without excess, allowing the surface to dry between waterings. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually fragile perennials: by bringing them indoors at the first frost, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, with good winter mulching and protecting the stump from moisture with plastic. Plan for light pruning in March.
