Description

The Begonia × benariensis 'F1 Big Rose Bronze Leaf' is a recent and vigorous annual begonia, perfectly suited for use in flower beds. This variety offers large, upright flowers early in the season, in a bright pink colour, single or semi-double. They bloom on a well-branched plant, with an erect habit, and adorned with beautiful bronze-coloured foliage. Like all semperflorens hybrids, this variety flowers continuously and reliably, from May until the first frost. It should be grown in full sun or partial shade in hot climates.

The Begonia 'F1 Big Rose Bronze Leaf' is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the Begoniaceae family. It is the result of several hybrids of species originating from Brazil. This variety is part of a series of recently selected hybrids known for their particularly early flowering, upright and vigorous habit, as well as their remarkable and vibrant colours. 'F1 Big Rose Bronze Leaf' has stout and fleshy stems, covered with thick heart-shaped leaves, of a beautiful bronze-green colour, very shiny, about 5 cm (2 in) long. This plant quickly reaches a height of 40 cm (15.7 in) with a diameter of 30 to 35 cm (13.8 in). Appearing in April-May, and present until the first frost, its large flowers are asymmetrical and 8 cm wide. Cup-shaped, they are open towards the sky and composed of rounded, light tyrian pink petals, arranged around a small yellow centre and grouped in clusters in the axils of the leaves. Begonias are monoecious, bearing exclusively male flowers (single flowers) and female flowers (double flowers). They are gathered in numerous terminal clusters.

This Begonia with bronze foliage tolerates full sun well, but can also be placed in partial shade, especially in regions where the summer sun is scorching. It can be used in flower beds, in vases, on balconies, or in large flower pots. The F1 Big series Begonias also make beautiful groundcovers, when mixed with different varieties. They pair well with plants that have light foliage and flowers, such as lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, and bidens, as well as Million Bells and Calibrachoa. For a more exotic look, they can be combined with dwarf cannas, amaranths, Alternanthera, or Hedychiums to create a colourful flower bed.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting them outside, once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The F1 'Big Rose Bronze Leaf' Begonia flowers from April-May until the first frost. It is placed in a well-drained, fertile, humus-rich and light soil, fresh but not waterlogged, in full sun or partial shade. Moderate watering is required (it does not tolerate excess water!) and frequent fertilisation for intense flowering. During the growing season, it is useful to provide fertiliser for flowering plants every week. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants. Begonia can be susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis. It is a frost-sensitive plant, so it does not tolerate negative temperatures. For this reason, it is often cultivated in containers that can be easily brought indoors in greenhouses or under a heated veranda at the first signs of frost.
