Description

The Begonia semperflorens F1 'Red With Bronze Leaf' (Big Series) is a recent and vigorous annual begonia, perfectly suited for use in flowerbeds. This variety offers large, upright, bright red flowers early in the season, either single or double, emerging from a dense and erect vegetation with beautiful bronze-coloured foliage. Like all semperflorens hybrids, this plant blooms continuously until the first frost. It should be grown in full sun or partial shade in warm climates.

The 'F1 Big Red Bronze Leaf' Begonia is a non-hardy herbaceous perennial plant, grown as an annual, belonging to the Begoniaceae family. It is the result of multiple hybridisations of several species native to Brazil. This variety is part of a series of recent hybrids selected for their particularly early flowering, upright and vigorous habit, as well as their remarkable bright colours. 'F1 Big Red Bronze Leaf' has sturdy and fleshy stems, covered with thick heart-shaped leaves of a beautiful bronze-green colour, very shiny, measuring about 5 cm (2 in) in length. This plant will quickly reach a height of 40 cm (15.7 in) with a diameter of 30 to 35 cm (11.8 - 13.8 in). Blooming from April to May, and lasting until the first frost, its large flowers are asymmetrical and 8 cm (3.1 in) wide. Cup-shaped, they are open to the sky and composed of rounded, red petals arranged around a small yellow heart, clustered in axillary clusters. Begonias are monoecious and bear flowers that are exclusively male (single flowers) or female (double flowers). They are gathered in numerous terminal bouquets.

This bronze-foliaged Begonia tolerates full sun well, but it can also be placed in partial shade, especially in regions with scorching summer sun. It can be used in flowerbeds, in planters, hanging baskets, or in large flower pots. The F1 Big series Begonias also make beautiful ground covers when mixed with different varieties. They pair well with plants with light foliage and flowers, such as lobelias, annual pennisetums, bacopas, bidens, as well as petunias. For a more exotic look, they can be combined with cannas, castor beans, or Hedychiums to create a colorful flowerbed. Finally, it is worth noting that there are hardy begonias, such as Begonia grandis.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (conservatory, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The F1 'Big Red Bronze Leaf' Begonia flowers from April-May until the first frost. It is placed in a well-drained, fertile, humus-rich and light soil, moist but not waterlogged, in full sun or partial shade. Moderate watering is recommended (it does not tolerate excess water!) and frequent fertilisation for intense flowering. During the growing season, it is useful to provide fertiliser for flowering plants every week. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants. Begonia can be prone to powdery mildew and botrytis. It is a frost-sensitive plant, so it does not tolerate negative temperatures. For this reason, it is often cultivated in containers that can be easily moved into greenhouses or under a heated veranda at the first frost.
