Description

This mix of Cosmos Double Click Mixed brings together several easy-to-grow annual plants, which stand out for their originality and variety of flowering. They produce large double or semi-double flowers, with tubular petals, displaying a whole range of shades ranging from white to purple, including various shades of pink. These cosmos with graceful foliage and colourful corollas bloom as long as summer lasts. An impressive Cosmos that would not have been disowned by the impressionist painters. This variety is suitable for the back of flower beds, in a flower garden, or an English garden. Magnificent in bouquets.

The plants in the Double Click Mixed mix are all derived from an annual species native to Mexico and the extreme south of the United States, Cosmos bipinnatus. This non-hardy annual plant, related to Dahlias, belongs to the Asteraceae family. It shows a characteristic inflorescence in a head shape and particularly fine foliage, which is called pinnatisect, reminiscent of fennel. Each variety in this 'Double Click Mixed' selection quickly forms clumps 90cm (35in) to 1m (3ft) tall, 50cm (20in) wide. Flowering begins in June-July and lasts until October, only ending with the first frosts. The flower heads measure 5 to 7cm (2 to 3in) in diameter and are composed of several crowns of petals with varied appearance and colour. Depending on the plants, they can be white, light or vibrant pink, red, mauve, purple, solid or bicoloured. The center of the flower is made up of a golden disc. They attract many insects and butterflies, including the Monarch. The foliage is finely divided into thread-like segments, barely 0.5 to 1mm (0in) wide, and it is slightly and pleasantly fragrant.

Able to fill a flower bed on its own, the Cosmos Double Click Mixed offers an abundance of naive flowers in an almost limitless combination of colours. These flowers are perfect for beginners, almost impossible to fail. Its flowering is foolproof; poor soil, heat, humidity. Give it sunlight and it will bloom no matter what. This tall plant adds verticality to flower beds and lightness to the heavier blooms of perennials. During flowering, the plant may collapse under its weight due to wind or rain showers. This problem can be solved by grouping the plants so that the leaves support each other. It can be used in wildflower meadows, mixed with linaria, grasses, Buenos Aires verbena, or among perennials that love the sun as much as it does, such as bidens and rudbeckias. Its original flowers have a very good vase life.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in sheltered areas (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

The 'Double Click' Cosmos loves the sun and is easy to grow, even in degraded soil. Place it in a moderately fertile, cool but well-drained neutral soil. Plant it in the garden as soon as the risk of frost is gone, for flowering from June to October.

Pinch the tips of the shoots on each stem when transplanting to encourage branching and the production of numerous flowers. Cosmos prefer full sun but tolerate partial shade. These plants are drought tolerant once established, they are not prone to diseases but can be targeted by aphids. Spontaneous seedlings are common but not always true, without becoming invasive. To prolong flowering, remove faded flowers. Water regularly in case of prolonged dryness and mulch if necessary to protect from drying out.
