Description

The Cosmos Sonata Light Pink is an annual plant with large, light flowers, as generous as summer gets - even in dry soil. This particularly compact variety has pale pink flowers with a golden throat. The strong stems are covered with dark green fennel-like foliage. This little plant that fits in anywhere will bring a lot of charm and poetry to the late season - in borders, among perennials and even in containers.

The Cosmos Sonata Pink is one of the many cultivars of this annual, with well-deserved success. Related to Dahlias, Cosmos belong to the aster family. They have characteristic flower heads when in bloom. Sonata Pink has particularly fine foliage, described as compound, reminiscent of fennel, slightly and pleasantly scented. This compact variety with strong stems quickly forms a dense tuft of 50 cm (19.7 in) in height, and 30 cm (11.8 in) in width. Flowering begins in June-July and lasts until October, only stopping with the first frost. The heads measure 8 cm (3.1 in) in diameter and are composed of a crown of pale pink petals, barely veined with a deeper pink. The center consists of a golden disc. They attract many insects and butterflies, including Monarchs.

Capable of filling a container from summer until the frosts start, or of colonising a slope or a bed, the Cosmos Sonata Pink offers an abundance of simple flowers with childlike appeal, in a very pure color. These plants are made for beginners, being almost impossible to fail. This plant adds density to beds and lightness to the heavier blooms of perennials, with stems that don't bend under the weather. It can be used in pots on the terrace or balcony, in rustic settings, mixed with ash trees, grasses like Stipa tenuifolia, Verbena venosa, or among sun-loving perennials like bidens and rudbeckias. Its innocent flowers have a very good vase life.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store under cover (veranda, greenhouse, frame) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Cosmos Sonata Pink loves the sun and is easy to grow, even in degraded soil. Place in a moderately fertile, fresh but well-drained neutral soil. Plant during spring for blooms from June to October.

When transplanting pinch the tips of the shoots on each stem to encourage branching and the production of numerous flowers. Cosmos prefer full sun but tolerate partial shade. These plants are drought-resistant once established. They are not very susceptible to diseases but can be targeted by aphids. Spontaneous seedlings are frequent but not always reliable, without becoming invasive. To prolong flowering, remove faded flowers. Water regularly in case of prolonged drought and possibly mulch to protect from drying out.
