Cosmos Rubenza Carmine Red plugs - Garden Cosmos
Cosmos Rubenza Carmine Red plugs - Garden Cosmos
Cosmos x bipinnatus Rubenza rouge carmin
Garden Cosmos, Mexican Aster
Disappointed with the size The cosmos have a very beautiful, very velvety garnet colour and then they turn fuchsia. However, the flowers are 7 to 8 cm.. we're a long way from the promised 18 cm, which doesn't create the expected effect at all in my border display!

Description
The 'Rubenza' carmine red Cosmos is a spectacular variety, unique in size and colour of its flowers, which earned it recognition at Fleuroslect. Its velvety flowers, as large as a hand, open in dark ruby red and then turn into intense pink, creating a stunning two-tone effect on the plant. They continue to bloom until October, carried by stems adorned with delicate fennel-like foliage. An excellent cut flower, this annual plant also makes a big impact in wildflower meadows and prairies.
The 'Rubenza' Cosmos is one of the many cultivars of this popular annual known as Cosmos bipinnatus. Related to Dahlias, Cosmos belong to the aster family. They have the characteristic inflorescence in the form of a head. 'Rubenza' has finely cut foliage, referred to as pinnate, resembling that of fennel. It is slightly and pleasantly scented. This variety quickly forms a dense clump, reaching 90 cm (35in) in height and 30-40 cm (12-16in) in width. Flowering begins in June and lasts until October, only ending with the first frost. The heads measure 15 cm (6in) and sometimes even up to 20 cm (8in) in diameter, composed of a crown of deep carmine red pleated petals that turn into bright magenta pink. The center is made up of a golden disc. They attract numerous insects and butterflies, including the Monarch.
Capable of transforming a slope, a bed, or a wildflower meadow, the 'Rubenza' Cosmos abundantly offers its immense single flowers, visible from afar. Cosmos flowers are perfect for beginners, almost impossible to fail. This plant brings a lot of colour to beds and allows for the creation of stunning bouquets for months. It can be used in rustic settings, mixed with grasses (Miscanthus, Pennisetum, Panicum, etc.), Argentine vervain, cornflowers, or among perennials that love the sun as much as it does, such as large daisies, heleniums, asters, and sunflowers, for example. Its association with white dahlias and goldenrods (Solidago) is also remarkable.
Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively gone.

Planting and care
The 'Rubenza' Cosmos loves the sun and is easy to grow, even in degraded soil. Place it in a moderately fertile, fresh but well-drained neutral soil. Plant it in spring, after frost, for flowering from June to October.
Pinch the tips of the shoots on each stem, during transplantation, to encourage branching of the stems and the production of many flowers. Cosmos prefer full sun, but tolerate partial shade. These plants are drought resistant once established, they are not very susceptible to diseases, but can be targeted by aphids. Spontaneous sowings are frequent, but not always reliable, without becoming invasive. To prolong flowering, remove faded flowers. Water regularly in case of prolonged drought and optionally mulch to protect from drying out.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
