Description

Fuchsia SUMMERMELODY® 'Sunmarcos' is a charming hybrid fuchsia developed for adorning balconies and patios. The plant has a lovely upright and branching habit and flowers continuously from May to October. Its small, pendulous, bright pink to reddish-pink flowers with a violet to bluish-violet corolla are delicate and brightly coloured.

This cultivar belongs to the family of Onagraceae. The horticultural fuchsias grown in gardens and on patios come from a long process of selection carried out from botanical species originating mainly from Central and South America.
Fuchsia Summermelody 'Sunmarcos' is part of the Summermelody® series, attributed to G.G.G. Grünewald, in the Netherlands. In a few weeks, the plant forms a bushy, upright clump of about 40 cm in height and 50 cm in spread. The foliage is composed of opposite leaves, sometimes in whorls of three, ovate to lanceolate, finely toothed, dark green. The small flowers are single and pendulous, borne on slender pedicels. The narrow and elongated sepals open wide and then curve back slightly; they are a clear, deep pink which can tend towards raspberry pink. The corolla is shorter and tighter, forming a little skirt of a deep purplish violet, in a cool shade, bluish-violet shade, especially in the darkest areas. Long, protruding, bright pink stamens escape from the corolla. The flowering period extends from May to October. In most regions, this plant will need to be overwintered protected from frost.

This fuchsia is mainly grown in pots, containers or window boxes, in partial shade, in a rich potting compost that does not dry out too quickly in summer. Its bright pink and bluish-violet flowers combine well with other fuchsias in the same colour range. For a display in pinks, mauves and whites, it can be grown with Fuchsia ‘Blue Sarah’, Fuchsia ‘Blue Angel’, Fuchsia ‘Annabel’ and Fuchsia ‘Tom Thumb. You can group them together in a large container or in several pots placed close together, sheltered from scorching sun and wind.

Planting and care

Plant your Fuchsia 'Summermelody Sunmarcos' in a rich, moist and well-drained substrate, in sun or partial shade. Fuchsias need plenty of light to flower well, but they don't like full summer sun (even more so in our southern regions). Water regularly, as they dislike drought, but don't overwater.
When grown in pots, make sure not to leave water in the saucer, as this may cause the roots to rot and the leaves to drop. Feed with a liquid fuchsia fertiliser every fortnight during the growing season. Regularly clean away wilted flowers and dry leaves. Young shoots can be pinched out to encourage the plant to branch out and produce more flowers, which are always carried on the current year’s shoots. Prune back in autumn after flowering. Fuchsias can also be grown indoors, where they are perennial and evergreen.
