Description

The Impatiens Sunpatiens Compact Red is a variety of Impatiens that is denser and more compact, offering a long and abundant perfect red flowering, enhanced by its beautiful dark green foliage. This exceptional variety has another characteristic, which is to tolerate all exposures and to adapt well to both cool climates and hot regions of our country. Covered with flowers from June until the first frost, resistant to diseases and not very fragile, it is a truly easy and generous plant to adopt without hesitation in a window box, in a nice pot on the terrace, or planted in a large border along a path or a wall.

The SunPatiens® of the Compact series are the result of hybridisation work that has made it possible to develop resistant and floriferous plants from New Guinea Impatiens. Belonging to the Balsaminaceae family, they are perennials that are grown as annuals in our latitudes, as they will not withstand the first frost. However, they have many other advantages, awarded in 2006 in Italy (among others, best plant for borders): they are robust, vigorous, and require no maintenance. Their compact ball-like habit allows for a beautiful rounded effect without pruning, with a height of 40 cm (more in hot climates) and a minimum spread of 30 cm (11.8 in). Their numerous leaves are green and shiny, oval-shaped, with dentate edges and ending in a point. From the end of spring, multiple flowers appear and continue to bloom until autumn. They measure 4 to 5 cm in diameter and consist of five heart-shaped petals, widely spread. Their pure red colour is particularly deep. It coordinates with many other colours to create vibrant and joyful ensembles. It is also a plant with original characteristics: studies have shown that Impatiens have the ability to absorb harmful gases and lower the ambient temperature. They are therefore considered depolluting or purifying plants.

In containers on the terrace or in pots near entrances, the 'SunPatiens® Compact Red' offer you a floribundity that is foolproof and almost maintenance-free, apart from regular watering in hot and dry periods. Preferring cool and rich soils, they will nevertheless tolerate full sun exposure and also accept semi-shaded or even shaded conditions. When planted together, they quickly form colourful and imposing borders. When planted alone, they enhance the somewhat mild summer blooms. You can pair them with the Impatiens Sunpatiens Compact White, Hot Blue lobelias, or Chardonnay begonias, for example.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in mini-pots are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before installing them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The Impatiens Sunpatiens Compact Red is easy to grow. It should be placed in full sun or partial shade. Plant it in the ground in spring from March to May, after the last frost as Impatiens cannot tolerate frost, for flowering from June until the first frost in October. To accelerate its growth, pre-cultivate it in a pot in a warm and bright place. Place the Impatiens in a well-drained and humus-rich soil. Water it generously but be careful not to overwater. Pruning is not necessary. Very floriferous and fast-growing, it is hungry. Feed it with liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to maintain a beautiful appearance and extend the flowering period. Beware, protect it from slugs that enjoy their young leaves, but otherwise, the Impatiens Sunpatiens compact is resistant to diseases.
