Description

Petunia Amore Pink Hearts is an unusual variety belonging to a series of cultivars characterised by their flowers marked with unique heart-shaped patterns on the edge of the petals. The plant forms a round and brightly coloured clump, adorned with single flowers where dark pink hearts radiate on a white background around a bright yellow throat. The plants flower until October. This unique annual brings so much colour to flower beds, containers, and hanging baskets. It is easy to grow in the sun, in fertile, light, and moist soil.

Hybrid petunias all originate from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. Amore Pink Hearts belongs to the Solanaceae family. They are closely related to ornamental tobacco, for example. Their foliage contains alkaloids. This variety quickly forms a round and dense clump, reaching a height of 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) with a similar diameter. The plant flowers from May to October if it is well-watered and regularly fertilised. Its fuchsia-pink and white cup-shaped flowers are large and vibrant, tightly packed together on dense foliage. The small centre of the corolla is marked with yellow and pale green. The pubescent foliage has entire edges and a dark green colour. It is vigorous and healthy.

No other annual flowering plant has received such intense selection efforts from breeders for such a long period of time. The results are impressive, as petunias rival geraniums in terms of splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this variety developed in Israel. Plant it in large containers or hanging baskets for stunning results. It can create a perfect contrast with black-flowered petunias, or a very colourful display with yellow or red petunias. You can also plant it in flower beds to punctuate borders of plants with grey foliage, such as dusty miller, sea cineraria, or wormwood. If you want to stand out, plant several petunias to form a unique ground cover at the base of plants with grey foliage, such as catmints or perennial salvias.

Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frost is passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light, humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather.

They are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season.

Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep the plant looking neat and extend the flowering period.
