Description

Petunia Corona Rose Rim is a revolutionary new hybrid variety from the Corona series, with trailing but compact plants, with a stable and contrasting bicolour colouration throughout the season, regardless of the climatic conditions. 'Rose Rim' produces an abundance of large funnel-shaped flowers in a fresh and vibrant pink, with a large white centre, also finely edged with white. This flowering is well distributed throughout the plant from May to October. In summary, it is an annual plant with many qualities, accessible to beginner gardeners that will quickly become essential for decorating terraces and balconies!

Hybrid petunias are all derived from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. The chance discovery of trailing petunias occurred in 1989, when a scientist noticed a particularly vigorous and brightly flowering wild petunia on the edge of a field: Petunia inflata. Crossed with others, this species gave rise to trailing petunias, which were given the marketing name Surfinias. The 'Corona' series is the result of 11 years of work and was developed in England. Petunia 'Corona Rose Rim' belongs to the solanaceae family, it is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. This plant quickly forms a neat, slightly trailing clump, at least 25 cm (10in) tall and 50 cm (20in) in diameter. It produces large velvety flowers along its densely fuzzy stems, from May to autumn, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed and it is regularly fed. Its flowers bloom on fairly hairy, greyish, dark green foliage with elongated leaves that have entire edges.

No other flowering annual plant has undergone such in-depth selection work by breeders for over a century. The results are impressive and petunias rival pelargoniums in terms of splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this variety. Plant it in large pots or hanging baskets, above walls, wherever its flower-covered stems can hang down. You can also plant them in flower beds, in large patches, to punctuate borders of plants with grey foliage such as cerastiums or artemisias, or to cover the base of roses. 'Corona Rose Rim' pairs well with 'Hot White' lobelias, 'Saphir' lobelias, or white petunias that will perfectly enhance its bicolour flowers.

Note: Please be aware that plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in shelters (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost is passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your 'Corona' petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. The petunias will flower from June to October. Plant your petunias in a sunny or partially shaded position, sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess humidity. They tolerate drought quite well but will need regular watering during hot summer temperatures. Petunias are susceptible to frost (minimum -1°C (30.2°F)). They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves regularly to keep them looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
