Description

The Petunia Sophistica Blackberry, originating from South America, is remarkable for its astonishing black colour. It forms a veritable cascade of large single flowers from June to October. It is a perennial herbaceous plant, cultivated as an annual in European climates. A creeping hybrid plant.

This Petunia is very floriferous and of great interest in hanging baskets with its long, densely hairy stems. It measures 30 to 40cm (15.7 in) in height. The flowers are 5 to 6cm (2 - 2.4 in) in diameter and consist of five petals arranged in a circular manner, with a single flower per peduncle.

Resistant to drought and heat, they appreciate full sun or partial shade. The Petunia Sophistica Blackberry has rapid and vigorous growth.

Green plants measuring 4 to 8cm (1.6 - 3.1 in) sold as sets of 5 small plug plants measuring 2.5cm (1 in) in diameter and 4cm (1.6 in) in height. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and are strong enough to be planted in open ground.

Pairs well with the Petunia Sophistica Lime Green.

Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, frame) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Sophistica Blackberry petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to grow them in open ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (petunias can tolerate a minor late frost). In the meantime, pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to speed up their growth. Petunias will bloom from June to October. Plant Sophistica Blackberry petunias in sun or partial shade, sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich but most importantly well-draining soil. Do not overwater at the start of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer periods. Petunias are susceptible to frost (minimum -1°C). Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
