Description

Petunia 'Merlot', originating from South America, is remarkable for its stunning pink flowers veined with dark pink (unusual colour for petunias). It forms a true cascade of large single flowers from June to October. It is a perennial herbaceous plant, grown as an annual in our climate. It is hybrid and creeping.

This Surfinia Petunia is very floriferous and very interesting in hanging baskets with its long densely hairy stems. It measures between 30 and 50cm (19.7 in) in height. The flowers are 5 to 6 cm (2 - 2.4 in) in diameter. They consist of five petals arranged in a circular manner with a single flower per peduncle.

Resistant to drought and heat, they appreciate sunny situations. The Supertunia Petunia has rapid and vigorous growth.

Young plants measuring 4 to 8cm (1.6 - 3.1 in) in small 5-packs of 2.5cm (0.8 in) diameter and 4cm (1.6 in) in height. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and are strong enough to be planted in the ground.

Note: Attention, our young plants in small packs are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Merlot petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. The petunias will flower from June to October. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-bearing soil, but above all, well-draining. Do not water them too much at the beginning of their growth as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer days. Supertunia petunias are frost-sensitive (minimum -1°C). Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and prolong the flowering.
