Description

Petunia RoyalSky, the pink version of the phenomenal 'NightSky', is an extraordinary, popular variety that has become a true star in the gardening world. It produces large funnel-shaped flowers with a fascinating colour, very different from any other flower. Each flower is unique, but they all have a charming pattern of varying-sized white spots on a canvas of vibrant pink. They bloom abundantly from summer until the first frost, on a plant that forms a gracefully trailing ball. A new, head-turning variety

Petunias belong to the solanaceae family; they are closely related to ornamental tobacco and their foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial or tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals, and all originate from the warm regions of South America.

Petunia RoyalSky is part of a new series of hybrids that truly stand out. It quickly forms a beautiful, dense, semi-trailing clump, with its long, fuzzy stems rising 20-30 cm (8-12in) before cascading 50-60 cm (20-24in) or more. The plant flowers from May-June to October, as long as it is regularly fed and watered. Its large, cup-shaped flowers are about 7 cm (3in) in diameter, in a bright pink, sprinkled with varying-sized white spots. These spots become more intense when there are significant temperature differences between day and night. The flowers bloom on dense, vigorous and healthy foliage. The dark green, quite hairy, oval and pointed leaves have entire edges. This variety shows good resistance to rain and sun and requires very little maintenance: simply remove faded flowers regularly.

No other flowering annual plant has been subjected to such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival geraniums in terms of the splendour and length of their flowering, as demonstrated by this sparkling Royal Sky variety, a true horticultural achievement in terms of colour. Plant it in large, designer pots or hanging baskets, on its own or, with Petunia Night Sky. You can also combine it with other annual plants such as lobelia, sanvitalia, morning glories and trailing geraniums, either in harmonious colours or to create striking contrasts. Use its flowers to decorate a centrepiece, for example, place a vase filled with pink flowers of Baby Doll next to each place setting for girls or blue NightSky flowers for boys: you will amaze your guests!

Note: Our plug plants are products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them in a sheltered place (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summers. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear, to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
