Description

Petunia Splash Dance Magenta Mambo is a novelty that will delight petunia collectors and fans of fantasy. This variety features large frilly flowers with a unique pattern: a cream-yellow background randomly speckled with magenta purple and a yellow-green throat that plunges into a black heart. Unlike other speckled or mottled varieties, its colour does not change with temperature, even in hot weather. It is also an early variety, with a semi-trailing habit that is perfect for ornamental hanging baskets and containers. Perfect for brightening up the terrace or balcony from May-June to October!

Petunia belongs to the solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These plants are annuals, biennials, or tender perennials, and are mostly cultivated as annuals, all originating from the warm regions of South America.

Petunia Magenta Mambo is part of a new series of hybrids with unique speckled patterns, regardless of the temperature. It forms a dense, semi-trailing clump, with long velvety stems rising to 25-30 cm (10-12in) and spreading to 50-60 cm (20-24in). The plant flowers from May-June to October provided it is regularly watered and fed. Its large, cup-shaped flowers are about 7-8 cm (3in) in diameter. Each flower is different, more or less speckled with magenta purple on a pale yellow background. The flower's throat is tinted yellow-green, and its heart is very dark. They bloom on dense, vigorous and healthy foliage. The quite hairy, medium green  leaves are ovate and pointed, with entire edges. This variety requires very little maintenance: simply remove faded flowers regularly.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival pelargoniums in their splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this Magenta Mambo variety. Plant it in large, white, grey, or purple designer pots, or in hanging baskets, alongside white, purple, pink, or dark red petunia varieties. You can also plant it in borders, to break up plantings with grey or white foliage such as dusty miller, sea cineraria, or wormwood. If you want to stand out, plant several to create an original ground cover. Use the flowers to decorate a centrepiece, sprinkled with gold glitter, for example: it will amaze your guests!

Note: Attention, our plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered location (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Splash Dance Magenta Mambo petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season, as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear, to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
