Description

Petunia BabyDoll is a fashionable variety with a fascinating colour. It produces large, funnel-shaped corollas, each one displaying a unique pattern of white spots of varying sizes on a bright pink background, resembling a constellation. They bloom abundantly from summer until the first frost. The plant forms a gracefully trailing ball. It is simply stunning in a hanging basket!

Petunias belong to the Solanaceae family. They are closely related to ornamental tobacco, for example. Their foliage contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals and are all native to the warm regions of South America.

Petunia BabyDoll is part of a new series of hybrids that stand out from the rest. It quickly forms a beautiful, dense, semi-trailing clump, with long fuzzy stems that rise up to 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) before cascading down to 50 to 60cm (20 to 24in) or more. The plant blooms from May-June to October if it is regularly supplied with water and fertiliser. Its cup-shaped flowers are large, about 7cm (3in) in diameter. They are bright pink, adorned with white spots of varying sizes. These spots become more intense when there are significant temperature differences between day and night. The flowers emerge against dense foliage. The pubescent leaves are ovate and pointed, with entire margins and a dark green hue. The plant is vigorous and healthy. This variety shows good resistance to rain and sun. It requires very little maintenance: simply remove faded flowers regularly.

No other annual flowering plant has received such intense selection efforts from breeders for such a long period of time. The results are impressive, as petunias rival geraniums in terms of splendour and length of flowering, as evidenced by this sparkling variety, BabyDoll, a true horticultural achievement in terms of colour. Plant it alone in large pots or hanging baskets. For a bold display, plant it alongside Petunia Night Sky. You can also combine it with other annual plants such as lobelia, sanvitalia, morning glories, and trailing geraniums, either in harmonious colours or to create striking contrasts. Use its flowers to decorate a table centrepiece, for example.

Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frost is passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light, humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather.

They are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season.

Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep the plant looking neat and extend the flowering period.
