More information

A lovely new addition for planters and borders, still relatively uncommon. The double flowers, with undulating pure white petals, are warmed with a golden yellow at the base. A rare, elegant colour, enhanced by large, light green, wavy leaves, arranged in a dense rosette. It will thrive in partial shade, in moist and humus-rich soil.

Description

The Primula 'Mr Brouart' is a difficult-to-find hybrid primrose in the horticultural market. It stands out for the elegance of its double white flowers, warmed by a small golden yellow heart. Its flowering period extends from April to June, highlighted by large wavy light green leaves arranged in a rosette. This small and very hardy perennial is easy to grow in moist soil, in borders, damp rockeries, planted in humus-rich and moist soil, in gentle sunlight, in partial shade or even in shade.

The Primula 'Mr Brouart' is a horticultural hybrid, derived among others from Primula vulgaris, which can be found in our meadows and undergrowth. Primroses belong to the primrose family. The foliage of 'Mr Brouart' develops in rosettes, emerging from the underground rhizome to form a beautiful cushion. The 8 to 12 cm (3 to 5in) long, wavy and velvety leaves are a tender green. From April to June, short flower stalks, 25 cm (10in) tall, appear, bearing 3 to 6 beautiful flowers arranged in terminal clusters and adorned with a small bud in their centre. At full bloom, they are double and slightly turbinate. The heart of the flower is golden yellow.

The 'Mr Brouart' primrose will particularly thrive in humus-rich, fresh but well-drained soil, conditions that can be found in damp rockeries or rocky areas bordering a small waterfall. In borders or in pots on a balcony, this plant pairs well with companions of all colours, such as pansies, hostas, forget-me-nots, peonies, or creeping bugles. Primroses are perfect in borders, low-growing beds under the cover of leafy plants, in rockeries and lawns, among snowdrops and violets.

The primroses in our gardens are almost all perennials, sometimes annuals and rarely woody plants. Their cultivation can be either very easy or very difficult. Often, the climate is a determining factor for their survival; some species die if the summer temperature is too high, others if the winter is too humid or too cold, etc. It is a complex genus that we have been cultivating for 25 years, but to understand the very different ways of life of all the rare species, one must spend a lot of time with them and know that they do not forgive any mistakes. The ones in this catalogue do not all offer the same degree of difficulty, but they can all be cultivated by a careful amateur. Some are easy to raise, others less so. it's up to you to choose the ones you think you can master the cultivation of!

Planting and care

The Primula 'Mr Brouart' prefers humus-rich soils, always moist but well-drained, low in limestone. However, it tolerates heavy clay soils as long as the water does not stagnate, just like the stemless primrose. Although it fears harsh sunlight, it does not like too dense shade either. An exposure to the north of a wall, for example, suits it perfectly, or in the morning sun. Over time, it forms beautiful borders capable of living for many years if the location suits it.
