Japanese Meadowsweet Collection - Spiraea japonica

This is a Japanese Spirea Collection that brings together three different varieties, varying in size, flowering and foliage. These deciduous bushes are valued for their generous flowering, which lasts from May to September, featuring flowers ranging from pure white to raspberry pink. Their decorative foliage, green or purplish depending on the varieties, adds colour to the garden from spring to autumn. You can plant them in a shrub border, in a low hedge or in a large border. These Spireas are hardy down to -20°C and require little maintenance.

This collection consists of:

1 x Japanese Spirea ‘Albiflora’: This variety is distinguished by its white flowering and light green foliage. It reaches approximately 60 cm in height and 90 cm in width, adding a bright touch to borders.

1 x Japanese Spirea ‘Anthony Waterer’: Taller than ‘Albiflora’, this Spirea reaches 1 m in height and 80 cm in width. It boasts raspberry pink flowers. Its foliage takes on a purplish hue in autumn.

1 x Japanese Spirea ‘Little Princess’: Compact and small (approximately 40 cm high and 70 cm wide), this variety is ideal for borders or small gardens. Its abundant flowers are a pale pink and its dense foliage is dark green.

Plant these bushes from February to April or in October-November. They thrive in full sun or partial shade, in moist, well-drained soil that is not too calcareous and not too dry in summer. They can be used in a shrub border, in a small informal hedge, and can also be grown in pots. Place the larger Spireas, such as ‘Anthony Waterer’, at the back of the border, with the more compact varieties like ‘Little Princess’ at the front. Allow for 3 to 4 plants per square metre for a mass effect, maintaining a spacing of 60 cm between each young plant.

Pair these Japanese Spireas with small flowering bushes that share similar soil and sunlight requirements. Weigela 'Kosteriana Variegata’, with its variegated foliage and pink flowers, will complement the colours of the Spireas. Position it at the back to provide height and create an elegant backdrop with its variegated foliage. Deutzia gracilis ‘Nikko’, with its clusters of white flowers and compact habit, can be planted in combination with the Spireas, allowing for a smooth transition between colours. Abelia ‘Edward Goucher’, a small semi-evergreen bush with fragrant pink flowers, will be positioned at the forefront. Plant 2 Weigelas at the back, 3 Deutzias mixed with the Spireas, and 3 Abelias in the foreground for a balanced composition.
