Description

The Triumph Tulip 'Caramba' is a rare variety in cultivation, with a variegated colour that is remarkable for its freshness and elegance. This narrow-petalled tulip offers white petals brushed with pink, where fuchsia flames dance and vibrant swirls of pink almost flash. Its petals are thick and waxy, and its flowers are carried by thick and sturdy stems. This variety also offers a gentle fragrance. It blooms in the middle of the tulip season, in the heart of spring, depending on the climate.

The 'Caramba' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is to have narrow cup-shaped flowers. Perched on tall stems of 45cm (18in) just above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the flowers are all different, but each is a marriage of pink and irregular strokes of warm pink on a white and iris background. They are tapered, with a narrow cup shape, composed of six "petals" (more precisely tepals). They are carried by thick stems, perfect for bouquets. The flowering takes place in April, in the heart of the tulip season.

The 'Caramba' Triumph tulip finds its place in large flower beds and, of course, in floral arrangements. Its freshness allows for associations with tulips in white or red tones that create a nice contrast. This also maximizes the duration of flowering in flower beds. Pair it with daffodils, jonquils, hyacinths, Corsican hellebores, and Euphorbias, and you will get surprising scenes. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, as well as in pots and planters. This tulip beautifully enhances balconies and terraces. It goes perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. In a vase, use very little water, just a bottom is enough! Furthermore, if your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The planting should be done in ordinary soil, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Caramba' tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in summer. Place it in a good, sunny or semi-shaded position. Once flowering is complete, it is preferable to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
