Description

Tulipa 'Dreaming Maid' is a stunning old variety. Its classic cup shape flower has a quite extraordinary colour. It opens shimmering purple and then matures into a deeper lavender pink, with petals edged in gleaming white, giving it a unique radiance when the sun shines. Its long, sturdy stems are weather-resistant and make very pretty cut flowers. This enchantress has it all: vigour, beauty, and grace

The 'Dreaming Maid' Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 1934 by Kerbert, it is part of the historically qualified tulips, cultivated at the Hortus Bulborum, in the north of the Netherlands. It is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, whose main characteristic is narrow cup-shaped flowers. Perched on 45 to 50 cm (18 to 20in) tall stems well above the broadly lanceolate, slightly glaucous green leaves, the elegant, medium-sized flowers, in shades of mauve pink and white harmonise easily with a whole range of soft or vibrant colours. They have a narrow cup shape with six thick, iridescent, slightly translucent "petals" (more precisely tepals) carried by very sturdy stems, perfect for borders or in vases. They flowers in April, in the heart of the tulip season.

The 'Dreaming Maid' Triumph tulip finds a place in large borders. Its fresh colours allow for combinations with tulips in white, pink, mauve, black or red tones, or with blue flowers (Forget-me-nots, Grape Hyacinths, Scillas, Hyacinths), in beautiful pastel and romantic compositions. This also increases the flowering period in borders. Pair it with white daffodils, hyacinths, or Corsican hellebores and euphorbias for stunning scenes. It can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flowerbeds, pots and containers. This tulip looks great on balconies and terraces. It pairs perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for creating elegant bouquets. In a vase, use very little water, just a covering at the bottom is enough! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, 15 cm (6in) deep, 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add undecomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Dreaming Maid will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant it in a sunny or semi-shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
