Description

The 'Flair' Early Single Tulip stands out for its radiant colour, a brushed orange-red highlighted by yellow and light orange, strong and remarkable in bouquets and flowerbeds. It blooms very early in the season, in March, on a short stem that is resistant to wind and rain. Planted in groups, this variety faithfully blooms every year, forming flamboyant patches of colour in the garden. It pairs elegantly with white flowers, blue hyacinths, or narcissus in white, yellow, or orange tones.

The 'Flair' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, obtained in 1978 in the Netherlands, it is currently classified in Division 1 of tulips, which are known for blooming early in the season. It is of modest size, reaching 30 to 35 cm (12 to 14in) high when in bloom. Perched on thick stems barely emerging from the broadly lanceolate leaves, the wide cup-shaped flowers with shiny reflections reveal a golden yellow interior, with small orange marks at the base of the petals that surround a small black heart with yellow stamens. It will flower in March or early April depending on the climate, at the same time or just after Greigii botanical tulips. This variety thrives well in the garden.

Early single tulips are well-known for their rich range of colours and sturdy and resistant flowers, suitable for flowerbeds and early-season bouquets. They are among the most widely planted varieties, unmatched for adding colour to pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flowerbeds, as these parameters can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for beautiful long-lasting cut flowers.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in the autumn, from September to December, 15 cm (6in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'Flair' tulip will grow well in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
