More information

The areas of the garden exposed to shade or partial shade are always difficult to beautify. This mix of perennial and annual flowers has been designed to bring colour to the edge of the undergrowth or under large deciduous trees, for example. The varied flowering extends from April to September from the second year. Sow the seeds preferably in September-October, by broadcasting them in a well-prepared and loosened soil.

Description

This Shaded Meadow Flower Mix is a selection of flowers well adapted to the lack of sunlight and competition from tree roots. Easy to grow in ordinary soil and requiring very little maintenance, they can be sown directly in place, in late summer or early autumn, in well-prepared soil. The flower bed will bloom for several years, from spring to summer starting from the second year, and will also provide a refuge for biodiversity.

This selection consists of 23 species of perennial and annual plants. Annuals bloom 6 to 8 weeks after sowing, while perennial plants, which live for several years, will bloom from the second spring onwards. All these plants show rather rapid growth and some self-seed spontaneously in the garden, in ordinary and well-draining soil. The height of flowering plants varies from 25 cm (9.8 in) to 1 m (3 ft 4 in).

Partial composition: Malva sylvestris, Borago officinalis, Papaver rhoeas, Myosotis alpestris, etc.

Meadow flowers combine usefulness with pleasure: blooming throughout the entire summer season while requiring very little maintenance, they bring the charm of the countryside to the garden. Ideal for adding colour and life to a slightly wild and shaded area, for example at the edge of a woodland, under large deciduous trees, or along a north-east facing wall. This mix also helps attract bees and beneficial insects to the garden.

Planting and care

Sowing:

Sow directly in place, preferably in September-October or at the latest in March-April, in soil that has been well worked with a spade, cleared of weeds, refined and raked. Sow thinly on the surface of the soil and then lightly rake to cover the seeds. Optionally, pass the roller to ensure good adhesion of the seeds to the ground. Germination normally takes 14 to 30 days. Regularly water with a fine rain to keep the soil slightly moist until germination.

Cultivation:

When the young plants appear, water well and remove weeds. Water regularly. Once well established, the plants rely on rainwater. Only water in case of a very hot and dry summer.
