Description

Nolana Sun Belle Mixed, also known as paradoxical nolana, is a frost-tender perennial plant grown as an annual in most climates. It has a dwarf and creeping habit, forming a colourful ground cover, covered in summer with small white, blue or purple flowers, highlighted by a contrasting yellow and white throat. Its slightly succulent almond-green foliage covers flexible stems that spread generously in rock gardens, flower beds, and hanging baskets. It should be grown in the sun, in ordinary soil, even occasionally dry.

Nolan belongs to the solanaceae family and is a frost-tender perennial plant native to South America, Chile, and Peru. It is a small creeping plant, reaching a height of 20 cm (8in) and a spread of 60 cm (24in), with alternate and slightly succulent, beautiful almond-green leaves. It is often grown as an annual because it does not tolerate frost. However, it is perennial in a greenhouse. Its trumpet-shaped flowers bloom profusely throughout the summer. The Sun Belle Mixed selection has bright blue, purple, or white flowers, highlighted by a vibrant yellow throat surrounded by a white circle. Each flower has a five-lobed calyx, a funnel-shaped corolla, and five stamens. The succulent and creeping stems are covered with small pointed and fleshy leaves, characteristic of an adaptation to drought.

Paradoxical nolanas are low-maintenance and undemanding with a long flowering period, easy to grow from sowing and drought-resistant. Nolana Sun Belle Mixed makes an ideal ground cover in dry soil, in rock gardens, or on walls. It can also be used to create beautiful borders in raised flower beds. It can be paired with Nepeta cataria, Artemisia schmidtiana nana, Delosperma cooperii, Thymus serpyllum, or Lippia nodiflora. It also performs well in flower pots and hanging baskets.

Planting and care

Sow Nolana from February to May.

Sow the seeds on the surface of a well-drained, moist seed compost. Cover the seeds with a thin pinch of compost or vermiculite. Place the container in a propagator or enclose it in a polythene bag and keep it at a temperature of 18-20 °C until germination, which usually takes 7 to 21 days. Do not exclude light, as it aids germination.

When the young plants are sufficiently developed, transplant them into 7.5 cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise them to cooler conditions for a few days before placing them in their final location, after all risk of frost, spacing them 30 cm (12in) apart. Choose a very sunny spot and well-drained soil.
