Description

Salvia farinacea 'Blue Saga' is a brand-new variety of compact mealycup sage. It is easy to grow, vigorous, and heat-resistant. It has an endless flowering of striking blue blooms. In short, it is a perfect plant for summer compositions, both in the ground and in pots. Tender but extremely fast-growing, this sage should be cultivated as an annual. It is a very pretty companion for dwarf gauras, silvery-leaved wormwoods, and zinnias.

Salvia farinacea is a perennial plant native to Texas and Mexico. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family. Its low hardiness and rapid growth make it an excellent annual under most climates. Salvia farinacea 'Blue Saga' has a particularly compact, highly branched, and bushy habit, forming 30cm (12in) clumps in all directions. This vigorous little sage forms bouquets of sturdy stems, covered with dark green foliage, with slightly toothed lanceolate aromatic leaves, covered on the underside with a whitish down. From July to October, upright and dense spikes appear, covered with small white hairs and adorned with intensely blue-purple petals. Mealycup sages get their name from their stems covered with a light bloom.

Salvia farinacea 'Blue Saga' is perfect in flower pots. It will also be beautiful in a flower bed, planted alongside ground cover or miniature roses, marigolds, a sowing of common borage, or dwarf rudbeckias. It can also be planted with grasses, gauras, shrubby salvias with fuchsia flowers, and shrubby wormwoods. This plant also forms pretty borders along pathways. Plant it with snow-in-summer (Cerastium tomentosum), which will carpet its base in a soft harmony of muted tones. Its very bushy habit is perfect for filling beautiful flower pots, in the company of pink calibrachoas or bacopas. Its flower spikes hold up well in a vase.

With over 900 species of annuals, perennials, and softwood shrubs distributed worldwide (except in very cold regions and the rainforest), the Salvia genus is the richest in the Lamiaceae family.

Our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.
