Arrived in good condition, in plug trays, they were immediately transplanted into 9 cm (4in) pots so that they can grow in the greenhouse. After several days, the recovery seems to be perfect, hoping for rapid growth for maximum summer flowering.

Description

Lantana camara 'Evita Yellow', with its bright yellow flowers, is part of a series of floriferous varieties selected in the U.S.A for their compact and bushy habit, ideal for ornamental pots and sunny containers. It is a small, non-hardy, woody shrub grown as an annual in temperate climates. Lantana 'Evita' varieties are also appreciated for their endless summer flowering in vibrant bouquets, which attract butterflies, and for their elegant dark green foliage. This plant is not demanding in terms of soil type, and is resistant to drought and sea spray, but requires sun to thrive.

Originally from tropical regions of Central America, South America and Africa, Lantana camara, also known as Lantana, Thousand flowers, or Golden basket, has a dual nature: this woody shrub of the Verbenaceae family is both despised in hot and humid tropical regions, where it becomes invasive, and adored by horticulturists in temperate regions. The 'Evita Yellow' variety, derived from this plant, will not exceed 40cm (16in) in all directions.
It is a bushy and rounded shrub, with multiple upright and branched, quadrangular and spiny stems. Its foliage, evergreen in mild climates and in greenhouses, is composed of dark green, dentate and slightly wavy leaves, truncate at the base and narrower at the top. In late spring, its fabulous flowering begins and lasts until the first frost: grouped in umbels measuring 4 to 5cm (2in) in diameter, the small tubular flowers form a myriad of round and colorful bouquets: the flower opens pale yellow, darkens to bright yellow, and gradually deepens to orange-yellow.

In mild climates, Lantana camara 'Evita' can be planted in the ground and remain there all year round, as it only tolerates light frost. Elsewhere, it is grown in pots or containers that are protected from frost in winter. It pairs well with blue flowers, such as those of Peruvian Heliotropes or Plumbago capensis. When planted in a border, it behaves like an annual: it is interesting to mix different varieties to create color mosaics. Lantanas can also be paired with Cleomes, Agapanthus, or Gauras in dry situations.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them in a sheltered area (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Lantanas in the ground or in pots. If you choose to plant them in the ground, wait until the last frost has passed (they can tolerate a light frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in pots in a warm and bright location to accelerate their growth. Plant your Lantanas in a sunny or partially shaded spot. In pots, they require a light and humus-bearing soil and appreciate the addition of fertilizer and water. In the ground, they tolerate drier soil and can withstand salt spray. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually delicate perennials: by bringing them indoors at the first frost, you can extend their flowering into autumn and winter. Outdoor cultivation is possible by the seaside, with proper winter mulching. Prune lightly in March.
