Description

The Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Land of Cotton' is a repeat flowering variety that bears magnificent double and fragrant flowers in soft and warm beige, cream, and peach shades. This superb cultivar has a unique charm and is ideal for flower beds. The plant quickly forms beautiful clumps of more or less evergreen leaves in winter. It blooms during a beautiful period between June and August.

The genus Hemerocallis belongs to the family Liliaceae or hémérocallidacées according to classifications. These are hardy and perennial plants with deciduous foliage, sometimes semi-evergreen. 'Land of Cotton', obtained in 1991 by Joiner, was awarded in 1995 in the USA (Honorable Mention). Derived from the Vanilla Fluff cultivar, this excellent variety has given birth to 11 more recent hemerocallis. The plant forms a fairly dense clump that will reach about 75 cm (30in) in height, with a relative spread of 50-55 cm (20-22in); hemerocallis tend to spread a little when they like the terrain. The flowers measure about 15 cm (6in) in diameter. They are composed of thick, iridescent-textured petals with fringed edges in soft yellow and cream tones. The throat is green. Each flower blooms in the morning and lasts no more than a day, but flowering extends from June to the end of August. The foliage is linear, bright green, and more or less evergreen in winter. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils but are more opulent and floriferous in moist soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive equally well in shade and the sun. Some can be invasive, so don't hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Hemerocallis is often called "the perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty, as it is beautifully exuberant and blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers (lilies, agapanthus, ixias, etc.) can be planted alongside hemerocallis. 'Land of Cotton' is an exquisite variety to be highlighted alongside mauve, white, or orange blooms. It pairs well with grasses, lavender, and chamomile, for example. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and decorate desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Land of Cotton' in well-draining garden soil that is not too clayey and enriched with humus and compost. This will allow your perennial to withstand summer droughts and winter frosts. This variety is easy to grow and not susceptible to pests or diseases, so no treatment is required, and rodents are not attracted to it. Daylilies can grow in partial shade and full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight sufficient—plant by burying the base 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) below the surface. If planting multiple plants, ensure enough space between them, as the spaces will quickly fill up. For a few weeks after planting, ensure the soil is moderately moist, but do not overwater. It is advisable to divide the plants, preferably in autumn after flowering.
