Description

The Geum Flore Pleno Blazing Sunset, also known as Benoite, bears exceptionally large, double flowers in a beautiful scarlet red from June to September. A stunning perennial in Cottage-style gardens and wildflower bouquets.

Originally from Chile and belonging to the Rosaceae family, the Benoite is a hardy herbaceous perennial, tolerant of temperatures as low as -15 °C. The Flore Pleno Blazing Sunset variety stands out for the size of its flowers: 50% larger than other varieties. They are double, a magnificent scarlet red, and bloom at the top of slender, branching stems. Its evergreen leaves are lobed and dentate, a beautiful medium green. It has a spreading habit, reaching a height of 60 cm (23.6 in) and a width of 45 cm (17.7 in).

Growing Geum is easy. If sown early, it behaves like an annual, providing flowering in the first year. It thrives in full sun or partial shade, in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil.

It is a plant with delicate charm that integrates well in Cottage gardens as well as in Curé gardens. You can plant it in border beds where it will work wonders alongside other Benoites, Crocosmias, Sulphur Cosmos, or the Monarda Fireball.

Planting and care

Sow Geums from February to July on the surface of a good seed compost. Gently cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator (or enclose it in a polythene bag) at a temperature of 18 to 20 °C. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes between 30 and 90 days.

When the young plants are large enough to handle, proceed with transplantation. Gradually acclimatize the plants to cooler conditions until they are sturdy enough to be planted outdoors. Transplant into well-drained soil at a distance of 30 cm (11.8 in), in moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade.
