Description
Salvia 'Rockin' Fuchsia' is a brand new variety of hybrid sage, not very hardy, grown as an annual in most regions. This variety stands out with its lovely fuchsia pink colour, rarely seen in this type of plant. Enclosed in an almost black calyx, the flowers bloom from summer to autumn on magnificent spikes that rise above dark green foliage, creating a beautiful colour combination. This heat-resistant variety is easy to grow. It quickly becomes essential in sunny flower beds, flower borders, but also to decorate the terrace, planted in pots. It is also a very beautiful cut flower.
Salvia 'Rockin Fuchsia' is part of a series of hybrids recently developed in the United States. The plants in this 'Rockin' series carry, among others, the genes of the Salvia farinacea, a perennial plant native to Texas and Mexico. Like all salvias, it belongs to the family of Lamiaceae or Labiates. Its low hardiness and rapid growth make it an excellent annual in most climates. The 'Rockin'Fuchsia' cultivar, introduced in spring 2019, has an elegant habit, both upright and bushy, forming clumps about 80 cm (32in) tall when in flower with a spread of 45 cm (18in). The plant forms bouquets of sturdy stems, covered with dark green and satin foliage, consisting of large lanceolate and slightly toothed aromatic leaves, deeply veined and wavy. They are covered on the underside with a lighter down. From June to October, tall dark stems covered with very pink petals emerge from a dark calyx. These flowers do not produce seeds, so the plant uses all its energy to bloom as long as the weather permits.
Sage 'Rockin' Fuchsia' will be perfect in flower borders, for example, combined with roses, catmints, hybrid mulleins, a sowing of borage or rudbeckias. It will enhance large-flowered peonies, emphasizing their romantic side. It can also be associated with grasses, gauras, and emerge from the silvery foliage of wormwoods or sea cinerarias. This plant also forms beautiful borders along pathways, and can be planted alongside Germander (Teucrium chamaedrys) or creeping thyme (Thymus hirsutus) which will cover its base in a beautiful harmony of pink. Its very neat habit allows it to fill pretty flowering pots, in the company of pink calibrachoas or bacopas. Its spikes hold up well in a vase.
With over 900 species of annuals, perennials, and softwood shrubs distributed throughout the world, except in very cold regions and the tropical forest, the Salvia genus is the richest in the Lamiaceae family.

Planting and care
The 'Rockin' mealy sages thrive in all fertile, moist, well-drained, well-loosened soils, in the sun. They are not very hardy and will be planted in the garden or in pots once the risk of frost is no longer a concern. They are heat-resistant plants, in soil that is kept moist.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
