Description

Trifolium Angel Cover Chocolate is a brand new variety of ornamental clover from the 'Angel' series. With its beautiful vigour and trailing habit, this lovely perennial surprises with the changing colour of its foliage, combining shades of brown-pink and tender green, which turn red in the summer sun. Perfect for adding a light and colourful touch to flowering pots and hanging baskets, it is also an excellent groundcover plant for the garden or rockery, to be grown in full sun or partial shade, in ordinary soil, even clay and limestone.

The Angel series ornamental clovers are hardy hybrid and horticultural perennial plants belonging to the Fabaceae family. Like most clovers, they grow as low and dense carpets, gradually colonising the soil by rooting their stems at the nodes. In the space of one season, 'Angel Cover Chocolate', reaching a height of 15 cm (6in) when in bloom, will spread to about 40 cm (16in), or even more in fertile and moist soil. The main asset of this clover is its foliage, which is more or less evergreen depending on the severity of the winter and subtly coloured. The leaves are divided into 4 entire leaflets, depressed in the centre, with toothed margins. Their colour, quite indescribable, varies throughout the season and depending on the amount of sunlight. In the centre, each leaflet is a water green or almond green, bordered by a darker area with chocolate brown reflections that will turn red under the summer sun. The discreet and short-lived flowering takes place in late spring or early summer. The dull and somewhat dirty white flowers are gathered in small rounded heads. Solitary or paired, these heads are carried at the ends of leafy flowering stems that protrude from the foliage.

Despite being underutilised in our gardens and even in our flowering pots, ornamental clovers are actually resilient plants, undemanding in terms of soil, easy to grow, and full of resources. Their colourful foliage and trailing or carpeting habit enhance all the plants they accompany. They allow for numerous uses, in flower boxes, hanging baskets, or flowering pots, but also in the garden to dress up sunny borders or empty spaces in a rockery. Both discreet and with a strong presence, they can be combined with many annuals in summer compositions, such as Petunias, Lobularias, Bacopas, Nemesias, or even Bidens, elegantly bridging the gap between contrasting flowerings.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

You can plant your ornamental clovers in the ground or in a pot. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (these plants are hardy). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth and ensure better establishment. Plant your clovers in a sunny or semi-shaded position, as the foliage colours are more pronounced in the sun and the elongation of the stems is less significant. They are content with ordinary soil, but it should remain moist. In the ground, a clay and limestone soil is not a problem, as long as it is properly prepared and loosened. In pots, ornamental clovers will need regular watering, especially during hot summer weather. They perish in overly dry soil. We recommend feeding them with liquid fertiliser during the growing season, along with all the other plants on the terrace. They are actually hardy and resilient perennials that can be easily grown in the ground in most of our regions.
