Condition and quantity of the bulb are as expected, but at this stage of the year, I haven't been able to admire the result yet, hence my 4-star rating instead of 5 on the review.

Description

Dahlia 'Ocean Bird' is a variety of decorative dahlia with lilac pink waterlily-shaped flowers and a white heart that blooms from July to October.

This perennial has swollen tuberous roots. Gathered in bundles, these tubers produce upright, hollow and ramified stems, bearing compound leaves with rounded leaflets. Solid, fleshy stems, 100cm (39in) in height, are topped with flowers with wide, flat, rather incurved ligules, 10cm (4in) in diameter, in lilac pink with a white heart.

The Dahlia 'Ocean Bird' thrives in rich, clayey but healthy soil, worked deeply in a warm and sunny location, sheltered from prevailing winds. It struggles in poor, sandy soils.

The Dahlia 'Ocean Bird' is used in mixed flower beds with other varieties or for making bouquets.

Tips: When planting, consider the dimensions for the composition of your flower beds.

Planting and care

The Dahlia 'Ocean Bird' is planted from mid-April to early May, at a depth of 10 to 15cm (4 to 6in) and with a spacing of 60cm (24in). Always stake the plants and tie the young stems loosely. Apply slow-release compost or organic fertilizer during planting, and liquid fertilizer once a month during growth. Water without wetting the foliage. There is no need to remove buds on this variety. Treat against aphids and slugs. Dig up the tubers before frost, cutting the stems to 15cm (6in) from the stump. Store them in darkness, in a cool and well-ventilated place, not too humid. Transplant in early May when the risk of frost has passed.
