Description

Zantedeschia ‘Denver’ is a variety of florist's arum with summer flowers that reveal a beautiful colour gradient ranging from violet-pink to white veined with green. This clump of dark green upright leaves speckled with white will find its place in a border or in a pot, especially in colder regions. This moderately hardy tuberous plant appreciates warmth. It prefers moist, rich soil to establish itself. Its flowers are magnificent in a bouquet.

Calla ‘Denver’ is one of the many hybrids obtained by cross-breeding between two main species native to eastern and southern Africa, Zantedeschia rehmannii and Z. elliottiana. It forms a clump about 60cm (24in) tall, composed of large sagittate leaves that stand upright. Dark green, they are speckled with white. Typical of arums, the spathe flower measures 7 to 7.5cm (3in) in diameter and 10 to 11cm (4in) in height. It hides a golden yellow spadix in its centre. The flowers of the 'Denver' variety have a colour gradient from top to bottom, going from dark violet-pink to white, veined with green at the base of the stem. The stem is tall and sturdy, ideal for cut flowers.

Calla flowers are highly appreciated by florists who often use them in their arrangements and bouquets. In the garden, Zantedeschia ‘Denver’ is particularly suitable for pot cultivation, especially in cold climates. In warm regions, it is possible to plant it in a border in moist soil. Combine it with other florist's arums to create colourful and diverse bouquets. Consider Zantedeschia ‘Crystal Blush’ with white-pink flowers, or Z. 'Captain Marbella’ with cream-white flowers.

Planting and care

Plant your Calla 'Denver' bulbs in spring (March-April) at a depth of 12cm (5in), spaced 15cm (6in) apart, in moist soil, in full sun or partial shade. Apply organic fertiliser at planting and at least once a year. Growing in a large pot is possible, and even recommended in colder regions. Ensure regular watering to keep the soil moist, with fertiliser every two months when the plant is in growth. In the ground, mulch them before the first frost. In a pot, store them during winter. You can cut the foliage after the first frost.
