Description

Verbena hastata 'Pink Spires' is a hardy perennial that stands out with its architectural appearance. This tall, upright, and highly branched plant bears small pink flowers along candle-like spikes. It is undemanding and easy to grow. It will provide a unique touch in borders and bouquets.

It is native to North America and belongs to the Verbenaceae family. It is hardy down to -15°C (5°F). This plant has a remarkable presence, both in terms of its size (90 to 120cm (35 to 47in)) and its long flowering period from June to September. It thrives in sun, in ordinary, humus-rich soil that is not too dry to moist. Its cultivation is easy and its maintenance minimal; you simply need to remove faded flowers to encourage a second blooming.

In the garden, it is easy to pair with other plants, adding an elegant verticality to borders. Plant it with Agastache 'Summer Love', Sedum 'Red Cauli', and Stipa pennata.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds from February to March. Sow in a seed tray or directly in a pot, in good seed compost that is well-drained. Lightly cover the seeds. Place in a warm location to maintain an optimal temperature of 18 to 21°C (64.4 to 69.8°F). Keep the substrate barely moist until germination. Germination usually takes between 21 and 30 days, but it can be somewhat random.

When the young plants are strong enough to handle, transplant into a pot, then gradually acclimatise the young plants to outdoor conditions before planting them in the garden.
