Mammillaria ruestii - Cactus

Mammillaria ruestii is the name under which this cactus still often circulates in collections, but current nomenclature assigns it to Mammillaria columbiana subsp. yucatanensis. This Mammillaria is appealing for its compact form and its pink flowering in a small crown, very characteristic of the genus. It adapts easily to pot cultivation in a very bright room, a conservatory, or a temperate greenhouse.

This plant belongs to the Cactaceae family. The name Mammillaria ruestii was published in 1905. It is a native species from southeastern Mexico to Nicaragua, as well as Jamaica, in the seasonally dry tropical biotic region. In the wild, it can be found in open, rocky or dry, well-exposed environments where water does not linger.
The plant first produces a solitary body, then forms a small colony with age. It develops globular to cylindrical stems, measuring up to 15 cm in height and 6 cm in diameter, depending on growing conditions. On its epidermis, the tubercles are conical, with woolly axils. There are about 20 fine and spreading white radial prickles as well as 4 more robust central prickles, which are yellowish-brown to reddish-brown and 6 to 8 mm long. The very small, pink to deep pink flowers barely open, appearing near the apex. The fruits of this mammillaria are oblong, bright red to orange-red, but they are rarely seen indoors. Growth is slow. This plant is not reputed to be toxic, but be careful of its prickles, especially near children and animals.

Indoors, it requires very bright light, sunlight behind a well-exposed window, an atmosphere containing 30 to 50% humidity, temperatures between 18 and 30 °C during the growing season, and a cool and dry winter rest period, between 8 and 12 °C. Its main sensitivity remains excess moisture, especially in cool weather. It thrives near a window, on a well-exposed windowsill, or in a bright conservatory that is lightly heated in winter.

Mammillaria will benefit from a stay outdoors from spring to autumn, exposed to the sun, sheltered from excessive rain. Bring it in before the first frosts to overwinter in a bright, dry, cool place, frost-free.

Plant this collector's cactus in an individual pot or mix it with a set of small succulent plants. To accompany it, you can choose Crassula ovata, Echeveria derenbergii, Aloe x rauhii ‘Cleopatra’ and Crassula arborescens ‘Curly Grey’, four indoor cacti adapted to bright light that require little care and watering. The contrast is pleasing between the prickly tufts of the mammillaria, the tight rosettes of the Echeveria and Aloe, and the shrubby habit of the two Crassula.
