Description

The Double Late Tulip Cartouche will seduce fans of charming, unusual and brightly coloured flowers. This recent variety flowers a little later, in April or early May with enormous double flowers with changing tones. They are white, randomly variegated and edged with a flashy cherry pink tone and all different. These chameleon flowers, perched on short and sturdy stems, will attract attention in borders, flower beds, and sunny planters!

The 'Cartouche' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, introduced in 2007, it is currently classified in the group of 'Double Late Tulips', whose main characteristic is to have very double and crumpled flowers, with peony-like shapes. 'Cartouche' is medium-sized (30 to 35 cm (12 to 14in)) and stocky with a  good-sized, double flower,10 cm (4in) in diameter, which unfolds like a peony. The combination of ivory white and a clear cherry red is particularly successful and impressive when planted en masse. At the beginning of flowering, some small green touches can be seen on the outside of the petals. It flowers at the end of the tulip season. Large lanceolate, bluish-green leaves complete the exuberant elegance of this variety.

The Double Late Tulip Cartouche finds a place in large flower beds and can also be planted in borders, rockeries, flower beds, pots and planters. This tulip will decorate balconies and terraces very well. It goes perfectly with tall perennials and is ideal for cut flowers, with the variety 'Astarte Design' (raspberry red with white edges), white Moonwort, and horned violets. Use very little water in the vase, a covering at the bottom is enough! If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase every day. Tulips are unmatched for bringing the colours of spring to pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for superb long-lasting cut flowers.

Planting and care

Place double Tulips Cartouche in a sunny location from October to December for a beautiful spring flowering. You can also place them in a partially shaded area. Plant the bulbs as soon as possible in light, fertile, and well-drained soil, and loosen the soil to a depth of 15 cm (6in) (the bulbs should be covered with twice their height of soil). Space the bulbs 10 cm (4in) apart, making sure they do not touch each other, to create a mass. Cut the stalks after flowering but let the leaves dry completely before cutting them.
