Tulipa Menton Unique

'Menton Unique' Late Double Tulip is a rare, unusual and truly beautiful variety. Its large double flowers in various shades of pink warmed by a peach to orange glow open like peonie,s with green and slightly puffy outer petals. It blooms late, in May, on tall but sturdy stems that withstand bad weather. Singular and romantic, this Dutch still-life flower is a charming addition to flower beds, and, of course, bouquets.

The Menton Unique Tulip belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of 'Late Double Tulips', but also in the section of Tulips with Peony-like Flowers, whose main characteristic is to have very double and ruffled flowers, with generous shapes.

'Menton Unique' is an unusual sport of the late single tulip Menton, from which it inherited the colour palette, double flowers, and outer petals retouched with green. This is a large variety, 55-60cm (22-24in), and its flower measures up to 10cm (4in) wide. Initially round and a pistachio green colour, it opens wider to reveal various shades of peach, pink, and orange. Its double, irregular corolla is surrounded by a row of outer petals that remain strongly tinted green throughout the life of the flower. Traces of green can also be found on some small petals located closer to the centre of the corolla. Its colour is a refined combination of soft pink, old rose, apricot, and green, harmonious and original. It will flower in mid-May, at the end of the tulip season. Each very sturdy stem bears a single flower that holds up well in flower beds and vases. It is a robust plant with very good hardiness and foliage composed of large lanceolate, bluish-green, slightly grey, chalky leaves.

The Menton Unique late double tulip looks good planted in groups in large flower beds, with other tulips in complementary colours such as 'Lady Charme' or 'Apricot Angelique' in soft orange-yellow, or pink (Angélique, Pink Star), mauve (Blue Diamond, Blue Spectacle) and white (Mount Tacoma). Mixing varieties with staggered flowering times maximizes the interest of flower beds. Menton Unique can also be planted among grey, bluish or silvery foliage that enhances its colours. It will look beautiful on balconies and terraces and produces superb cut flowers, which can be combined with 'Belle Epoque' tulips. It also pairs well with tall perennials.
