Description

The 'Pop Up Red' Tulip, still unavailable in the horticultural trade, is an extraordinary and very recent variety. It forms large green floral buds, from which very suddenly emerge sumptuous double carmine red flowers, resembling peonies. Standing at the top of 50cm (20in) tall stems, they catch the eye and will be irresistible in a flower bed with warm tones. The flowering takes place quite late, in April-May depending on the climate.

The 'Pop Up Red' Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of 'late doubles', although the unique structure of its flower almost deserves a specific horticultural category to be created. This compact tulip will reach 50cm (20in) in height when in bloom. The flowering takes place in April-May, a little later than that of other tulips. The flowers, 8 to 10cm (3 to 4in) wide, are strangely constituted, probably the result of a very rare mutation. The intense carmine red colour of its petals further enhances the unique aspect of its personality. The flowers last a long time in a vase or in the garden and allow to extend the tulip season until May.

With varied, tender or vibrant colours, opulent and naive flowers, late double tulips bring fantasy and romance to pots or sunny gardens, in the company of the most beautiful spring blooms. 'Pop Up Red' pairs well with tulips in warm colours like the yellow variety 'Nizza' and orange 'Ballerina', or dark ones like ''Cuban Night'. Don't forget to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these parameters vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is wise to plant a few more bulbs for bouquets, as they last a long time in a vase, and it is there that the fragrant flowers of 'Pop Up Red' will bring the greatest satisfaction. Very beautiful on a bed of lady's mantle, it is enhanced by the presence of small delicate flowers like chamomiles or forget-me-nots.

Planting and care

Place the 'Pop Up Red' tulips in a sunny or partially shaded spot from late September to December for spring flowering. Plant the bulbs in a light and well-drained soil, loosened to a depth of 15cm (6in). Space the bulbs 10cm (4in) apart without touching each other to create a mass effect that will give a more decorative appearance. The care required is very easy. Simply water regularly, especially during dry winters, and trim the flower stems after flowering. Allow the leaves to completely dry before cutting them.
