Bush fruit trees are trees grafted onto a short trunk, whose branches develop at an accessible height, often in a goblet shape. They are well suited to family gardens and small orchards, as they make pruning, thinning and harvesting easier without the need for special equipment. Apple trees, pear trees, plum trees or cherry trees on low stems should be planted in a sunny position, in deep soil, with enough space to allow air to circulate between their branches.

Among the reliable choices, the ‘Golden Delicious’ apple tree produces yellow, crisp and juicy fruits, just as enjoyable to bite into as to cook with. The ‘Belle de Boskoop’ apple tree is prized for its large, tart apples, perfect for pies and compotes. For plum lovers, the ‘Altesse Simple’ plum tree, also known as the Namur plum or Alsace quetsche, offers an abundant harvest of oval purple fruits with firm, sweet and flavoursome flesh.
In a small garden, consider columnar fruit trees. The espalier forms allow a fruit tree to be trained against a sunny wall.
